Kansas City Faves - Eats!

Fave 4 Eats in KC!

My family has lived in the Kansas City area for 2 years now. We moved from the Heart of Texas in the middle of summer. It was quite an experience, but I'll save that story for another entry!

So as you can imagine we have had to feel out the area and find things on our own through trial and error. So, being the planner that I am, I got on the computer and researched all kinds of different things KC has to offer. We don't always have money to spend on extra stuff so most of my suggestions are also pretty cost effective too!

Here are some places we have come to love:

Eats!

We tend to eat at home most nights and venture out only on special occasions. We do like to go out just the two of us but we like to have family outings as well. A great family friendly place is Cinzetti's Italian Market Place in Overland Park, KS. This buffet style restaurant is designed to feel like a Tuscan Villa: stonework, waterfalls, wine barrels, and all! When you walk in the friendly host staff gives you a tour of the 2000sq.ft. building, seats you in a sectioned off dining room, takes your drink order, then you are free to browse the 80+ food choices at your leisure.  All the choices are deliciously authentic from the pizza to the pasta to the calamari! I fill my plate with a little bit of everything. My favorite is the design your own fruit crepes station! A kitchen staff member is positioned behind a heated stone griddle where she makes your crepes to-order in front of your eyes! Cinzetti's accommodates the lunch, and dinner crowds and hosts a special Sunday Brunch on Mothers Day, too!

Smokehouse Barbecue Restaurant - Missouri & Kansas
Now, I am a meat girl, I love me some cow! So if someone recommends the steak, I'm there! When we are craving some tasty meats that will fill our bellies and make great leftovers we hit up Smokehouse Barbecue in Gladstone MO. The decor resembles an elegant southern summer home saturated in deep, rich colors and accented with elaborate oriental carpets and glowing stained glass windows. It also has a pig theme scattered about in the form of wall art and statues that just blends right in. Did I mention that I have an obsession with pigs? I highly recommend the burnt ends platter and if you haven't had KC BBQ then this is the place to try it! They are so well known that they offer to ship their products nationwide!

However, if you want something a little more fancy, for say an anniversary dinner, The Beer Kitchen and The Drunken Fish are two of my favorite mid-price range high-end restaurants. They are located in very interesting parts of town and have their own unique atmospheres.
    Beer Kitchen, Westport, Kansas City
  • The Beer Kitchen boasts an imported beer selection that any Beer Knerd would drool over, don't worry ladies they offer wine and mixed drinks as well. And the menu is quite impressive. They offer limited time entree specials that you won't find anywhere else. The last time we were there they were serving seared rabbit. I think I went with the enchilada bake and a champagne ginger cocktail. The place is located in the heart of the Westport Entertainment District. Westport is rich in American history with plaques posted on every building and is know as a bustling nightlife scene but it's shops keep things very busy all afternoon and into the evening as well. The restaurant itself is quite small and feels a bit cozy as wait staff need to maneuver past each table. It has an understated air of quirky sophistication that I fell in love with.

Drunken Fish in Kansas City Downtown. #sushi
  • The Drunken Fish is renowned for their exquisite sushi selection. The atmosphere is very modern in black and white tones with splashes of red here and there. It feels like you're on the cutting edge of fine dining. Waitstaff are clad in pressed linens and the dress code suggests business casual attire. The Drunken Fish has received several awards including Open Table Diner's Choice for 3 years running. We visited the location in the Power and Light District (There are 6 total locations in the metro) and I can't say enough about how accommodating they were to our family. We brought our 8 year old daughter with us and this is a "Business Meeting" and "Romantic Evening" type of place. I can't make any one food suggestion though, everything is delicious! That is, if you like sushi...

This lists just a few places out of a handful that we have sampled so far. There are lots of shopping plazas dotting the map across KC and each one has more places to eat than to shop! I'm sure with as many options as we have my top 5 will eventually change.

Stay tuned for more in this series of my favorite places in Kansas City!

Till Next Time,
